Mother's Day in the small country village of Seven Acorns sees the culmination of a month long competition to find the “Best Village Mother”; an honour which carries the reward of having a new hybrid rose named after the winning nominee.
The results are through and it is Felicity Good who has come out tops. Her family and friends, as well as a few choice local residents are awaiting her big moment in the grand marquee, but disaster strikes! Some dastardly person has cut every single last bloom from the new bushes!
The Name of the Rose is a murder-less whodunnit with a typical country village cast.
The suspects:
Felicity Good - Nominated Best Village Mother
With kind heart and warm arms Felicity welcomes into her home any in need. With all her good works it is hardly surprising she won the village competition for “Best Mother”. And given her prestige today Felicity has wheeled out her best dress and coordinated accessories.
Reverend Ian Peabody - Vicar
A typical English country village vicar. One could only describe Ian as scrawy, with a dog collar and woollen cardigan.
Veronica Peabody - The Vicar's wife
Domineering and completely in control over her surroundings, Veronica has grand aspirations for everybody. Needless to say, Veronica has turned out in her Sunday best for this grand occasion.
Simon Good - Felicity's eldest son
With his own doctor's surgery Simon is always busy and ever on call, with the result that he rarely goes anywhere without his doctor's bag.
Tim Good - Felicity's youngest son
Pale and weedy Tim rarely sees the light of day, preferring instead the company of the books in his own second hand bookshop.
Paula Fox - Rebel teenager turned model citizen
Although she has put her rebel ways behind her, Paula still manages to look unruly whatever she wears. Today she has just selected something comfortable and uncoordinated.
Reg Whittaker - Elderly Park Groundsman
Although in his best white shirt and trousers for the occasion, Reg couldn't help but put on his wellies and utility apron as well.
Mavis Grind - Village Spinster
In honour of the grand occasion Mavis has located and blown the dust off her best outfit. Unfortunately she is out of fashion by forty years or more.
Fred Barker - Pub Landlord
In shirt sleaves and dark trousers with a tea-towel hanging out of the back pocket, Fred has just popped over from the local pub to pay his respects.
Joyce Hunter-Ingalls - horticulturalist.
With wide brimmed hat on her head to keep off the sun, and her best gardening gloves to hand in her pockets, Joyce is ready to tackle anything ” green that is.
Max Graves - Local Reporter
With camera slung around his neck and a notepad ever to hand, Max is ready to scoop up any story ” and this one takes the biscuit!
Jane Cox - Head Teacher
An imposing presence in anything, Jane positively oozes “stern headmistress” from every pore. Helped no doubt by the glasses perpetually worn on the end of the nose. You certainly wouldn't want to be left waiting outside her office!
